Anesthesia awareness (waking up) during surgery, means the patient can recall their surroundings, or an event related to the surgery, hear noises or even feel the pain whilst undergoing surgery. Long-term effects include anxiety, sleep disturbances, flashbacks, nightmares, PTSD. Some cases of awareness might occur as a result of inadequate anesthetic dosing and therefore constitute potentially preventable medical errors.
